Manchester Town Hall
The 6.00pm vigil for the cowardly act of terrorism took place in Albert Sqaure, outside the town hall yesterday evening ????
This photo was taken inside the building a few days ago. Taken from the opposite end of the hall to my previous upload.
The organ was installed in 1877 by Aristide Cavaillé-Coll, a Frenchman, who had the reputation of being the most distinguished organ builder of the 19th century. It stands 16 feet tall and had more than 5,000 pipes, five manuals and 65 speaking stops. In 1893 Cavaillé-Coll cleaned it and added the solo organ. In 1912 another reputable organ builder, Thomas C. Lewis of Brixton rebuilt it and added the echo division. In 1970 the was a minor rebuild by the church organ company, Jardine of Manchester adding the mobile five-manual console.
