Marshall Gold Discovery State Historic Park by Jasperdo

Monroe Blacksmith Shop (circa 1900) On January 24, 1848, John Marshall found a few flecks of gold in the tailrace of Sutter's Mill along the American River in Northern California. Word spread quickly, and within a year over 300,000 "Forty Niners" had descended on the Sierra Nevada foothills in search of their fortune. Few found it. Today, most of the small town on Coloma is part of the California State Park System, interpreting the California Gold Rush.
